OU faculty's composition played for Galway

Oakland University faculty member, Terry Herald was recently commissioned to compose music for the University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award, presented to Sir James Galway at the 13th Annual Ford Honors Program at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Herald's task was to compose a piece to be performed by Michigan flutists as a tribute to Galway, a world-renowned flutist, at the end of the recital. Since so many prominent performers and teachers in the flute community were anxious to participate, Herald composed "Fantasie on Danny Boy" for four soloists and five antiphonal flute choirs.  A 100-member choir, directed by Barbara Ogar, gathered on the stage with the four soloists, including Jeffrey Zook of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.  Four other flute choirs were located in the main aisles of the hall.

Sir James and Lady Jeanne found the piece moving and have requested that it be performed at next year’s National Flute Convention in New York City.
