In an effort to provide a socially responsible model of institutional values, Oakland University is now offering staff members the option of a compressed work week. Employees who elect to take advantage of this program, which is being offered as a pilot for the summer months, will work four 10-hour days per week.
The model will extend hours for customer service while boosting morale and saving employees transportation and childcare costs. Staff members will coordinate days off so all university services will continue to be available five days a week.
“The compressed work week is a win-win. The 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption is good for the environment and good for our employees on an individual level,” said John Beaghan, Vice President for Finance and Administration. “In addition, this model has the potential to introduce greater job satisfaction and lower stress levels for our talented staff, resulting in a higher level of productivity.”
The compressed work week pilot program will be available to employees through August 30, 2008. If it is successful, consideration will be given to extending the option throughout the academic year.
