Seven future music educators from OU received some extra education of their own during the Music Educators’ National Conference in Milwaukee last month.
No student group from OU had ever attended the biannual event, said Chelsea Rhodes, a senior studying music education and the vice president of OU’s chapter of the Collegiate Music Educators’ National Conference (CMENC).
“It’s a really cool experience,” Rhodes said. “A lot of the things we attended were really inspirational.”
During the conference, the students were able to attend seminars, hear speakers and watch music performances, including one from the “President’s Own” United States Marine Band. They were also able to meet music educators from around the country, including the author of one of their text books, Rhodes said.
The students were able to take advantage of the MENC Mall, a resource mall where they could find information about new teaching techniques, lesson plans and online resources.
The students held Cold Stone Creamery fundraisers and monthly bake sales to raise the money to attend the event, which was held April 9-13.
“I was really proud of our organization,” Rhodes said. “They all worked really hard.”
