Undergraduate students from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, the University of Michigan-Flint, and Oakland University participated in the 16th annual Meeting of the Minds on Friday, May 16, in the Oakland Center.

With presentations ranging from complex chemical analysis to relationship studies, the event attracted spectators to the poster presentations and the oral presentations, which were held in South Foundation Hall.

“It’s a good chance for an undergraduate student to present research,” said Gero Harzmann, a researcher in the chemistry department. “”Most of the time you don’t get that chance.”

His research centers around organic synthesis and making molecules that can be used by biomedical and other groups. He is at OU as part of an exchange program, and plans to return to Germany to complete his diploma, the equivalent of a master’s degree, he said.

“This is my second time at Meeting of the Minds,” said Jamie Herzfeld, CAS ‘08. “It’s a great way to get your research out.”

Herzfeld, Angela Rowley, CAS ’08 and others studied differences in love and attachment in young adulthood. They will present this research at an American Psychological Science conference later in the year, and this is great practice for that, said Herzfeld.

“It’s very good because you get to show what you are doing and see what everyone else is doing,” Rowley said.

The lone Studio Art presentation this year was from Vanessa Sales, a post-baccalaureate student studying Art Education, who said her project was inspired by Manet’s “Olympia.” In the painting, a naked young woman looks confident and beautiful as she lies in bed, and Sales said she wondered what would happen if the woman aged.

Sales said she decided to ask her mother and several of her friends to bring pictures of themselves when they thought they were at their best. Sales made charcoal sketches of the women holding the photos, and displayed the works at the Meeting of the Minds event.

“I’m really impressed with the research everyone has done and how serious it us,” Sales said.

Students who made presentations at the event are also eligible to submit their research for publication in Volume 10 of the Meeting of Minds Journal of Undergraduate Research. For more information on Meeting of Minds, visit the Meeting of Minds Web site.
