Oakland University School of Nursing will once again host its popular Camp RN@OU for youth in seventh through ninth grades. This hands-on experience gives young would-be nurses a small dose of what their future may entail. The two-week summer program, designed to educate campers about the opportunities available to them in nursing, will run for two sessions: July 7 through July 18, and July 21 through August 1, 2008.
Participants will gain experience in nursing forensics, pharmacology, clinical calculations, nutrition, health and wellness as well as obtain CPR and First Aid certification. Participants will also tour Oakland’s campus, interact with nurses in a hospital setting and utilize the new physical assessment laboratory to learn about the human body.
With the shortage of nurses and health care professionals and a wider variety of career choices for students, Oakland’s School of Nursing hopes to get students excited about the nursing profession.
Kristina White, academic adviser in the School of Nursing said, “We want to give children a broader understanding of nursing. Nursing is more than just working at the bedside and this camp focuses on the endless possibilities of the profession.”
Qualifications to attend the camp include a 3.0 GPA, letters of recommendation and a short essay identifying the student’s goals for the future.
“We have had such a high demand for this camp each year,” said Dean Linda Thompson Adams. “It’s so encouraging to see young people use their summer break to study different aspects of health and health care.”
