Studio Art major Carla Butwin will showcase her work for the first time as a solo artist when she takes part in the Downtown Rochester Spring Gallery Stroll. Her paintings will be displayed at Studio One Salon, located at 424 Main Street.

This year’s spring stroll is Friday, May 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. During this biannual event, galleries and other businesses open their doors for community members to enjoy art and refreshments.

“I'm really excited to have the opportunity to show my work,” said Butwin, a Troy resident. “Throughout high school I was in competitions that allowed my work to be shown with other students at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, Cranbrook and the Center for Creative Studies, and the past two years my paintings have been shown at the Museum of New Art in Pontiac and the Oakland County Executive office, but I've never had a solo show.”

Studio One Salon owner Hillary Heacock has participated in the Gallery Stroll for four years and offered to display the work of an OU student. “We thought it would be a great way to connect students to the salon and the community.”

Heacock employs an OU student and many OU students are clients, she said. She offers the OU community a 10 percent discount on all products and services through the OU GO Card.

Butwin appreciates the opportunity to display her work during the Spring Gallery Stroll. Her career goal is to show her art in galleries, while also working in galleries or other art and design-related jobs. “Eventually, I'd also like to be a professor and teach painting or drawing at a college,” she said.

During the event, attendees can pick up a map and Gallery Stroll card at any of the participating galleries, and have it punched at each stop throughout the evening. Completed cards can be dropped off at any gallery on the stroll to be entered into a drawing for a Downtown Rochester gift certificate.

The Gallery Stroll is free and open to the public. Downtown Rochester Gallery Strolls are supported by the Rochester Downtown Development Authority and Suburban Lifestyles newspaper. In addition to Studio One, other participating studios and businesses include:

The City of Rochester and Oakland formalized a partnership in 2003 to engage in student internship opportunities and community initiatives. The university has participated in events and activities in the city, which was named 39th in a list of the top 100 cities in which to live by Money Magazine and CNN Money
