OU staff leaves now managed by Unum

To streamline a complex human resources process, University Human Resources (UHR) has contracted the Unum/Provident Corporation to manage Oakland University’s staff short term disability/extended sick leaves, as well as staff leaves that fall under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). FMLA coverage grants eligible staff members up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave for designated reasons.

“We chose Unum because they have a dedicated team of highly-trained representatives who are well-versed in short-term disability/extended sick leave claims management, FMLA regulations, state leave laws and customer service,” said Ron Watson, assistant vice president of UHR

OU staff members will benefit from excellent customer service and a convenient claims submission process. Claims may now be reported by telephone directly to Unum, and follow-up documentation may be submitted by mail. However, this does not replace notifying your supervisor of any time off needed.

This service will ensure that all OU employee claims are processed fairly and with efficiency. UHR will always be available to answer any questions on staff leaves.

Watson said, “Oakland University is committed to lean processes, and our partnership with Unum is one example of how we are maximizing efficiency while simultaneously boosting our level of service to OU employees.”

To provide staff members with full details on the new process, multiple training sessions are scheduled for April 23, April 24, April 29 and April 30. All staff members are encouraged to attend a training session. To enroll, visit the UHR Training Web site and click “FMLA Employee Training.”
