Yang Xia

Yang Xia uses microscopic imaging to detect early changes in the molecular architecture of diseased articular cartilage. These observations can have a significant impact on our understanding of osteoarthritis, a major health concern for millions of people world wide. Xia’s recent application for $ 2.5 million to support this research received the highest possible score (percentile score of 1.0) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is perfection in the grant world. Xia now will be directing two major NIH grants. Xia’s paper, “Resolution ‘Scaling Law’ in MRI of Articular Cartilage,” was published in "Osteoarthritis and Cartilage," one of the most prestigious journals in cartilage research. This paper was selected by the Osteoarthritis Research Society as “paper of the month” for April 2007. The strength of Xia’s biomedical research provides an outstanding foundation to the joint Oakland University Beaumont School of Medicine effort. Xia recently received a joint multidisciplinary award to extend his research with physicians at Beaumont Hospital.
