Pavlo Bosyy came to Oakland University with experience as an historian in his native Ukraine. He continues his involvement there as artistic director of the English-language Little Globe Theatre in Kirovograd and creates rich connections for Oakland. In the Ukraine, he directed, designed sets, costumes and lights, and served as dramaturg for “Queen Lear.” He has arranged for colleagues Michael Gillespie and Kerro Knox to direct and design for upcoming productions there. He also coordinated a research trip allowing the director, costumer, and two student designers for Oakland’s recent production of “Chekhov in Yalta” to experience the actual site where the play takes place. He also brought his production of “The Lesson” to Oakland, and is looking at further partnerships. Bosyy is active as a professional set designer. His designs have been seen at Meadow Brook Theatre for “Biloxi Blues” and at The National Black Theatre in New York for “Medea.” Bosyy curated a photo exhibit of Contemporary American Theatre at the Chyzhevsky Regional Research Library, received a Howes Fund Grant for Slavic Studies to study the influence of the Orange Revolution of Ukrainian theatre, and has presented papers in Paris, Berlin, and Honolulu since his arrival at Oakland. In addition to his scholarship, Bosyy is active in mentoring student designers and teaching a wide variety of courses for the theatre program.
