Assistant Professor of Education
Area of Recognition: Research
Since her appointment as an assistant professor in 2005, Ji-Eun Lee has published 12 internationally and nationally refereed journal articles as a sole author or the first author. In addition to her publication record, she actively disseminated her work at national and international conferences. Lee’s line of inquiry focuses on mathematics education, especially as it relates to developing instructional strategies for children’s conceptual understanding. She is interested in studying the nature of teaching and learning through several important lenses, including pre-service teachers’ perceptions and multicultural/international perspectives. Lee was a recipient of the 2007 American Educational Research Association’s Minority Junior Faculty Travel Stipend Awards. This award is given to only 10 junior faculty researchers in the United States. In 2006, she was nominated for the School Science and Mathematics Association’s Outstanding Early Career Scholar Award. This international association is one of the oldest mathematics and science organizations in the United States that is dedicated to improving instruction in science and mathematics. In 2007, she was invited to serve as an associate editor for "School Science and Mathematics," an international-level journal, which is the official journal of the School Science and Mathematics Association. This year, Lee is a recipient of a Faculty Research Fellowship that is supported by the OU Research Committee. She will conduct a pilot study on children’s understanding of algebraic concepts. She also will develop an instructional module based on her experience of teaching several different international mathematics curricula, which include a Russian developmental mathematics curriculum and a Korean national mathematics curriculum.
