Since 2000, Professor Dick Goody has been the director of the Oakland University Art Gallery and curator of collections. Through his leadership, the gallery became an essential part of the academic program in the Department of Art and Art History, an established cultural institution of the university, and an important art destination for southeast Michigan. From September to May the gallery produces six museum-quality and cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions. Twenty thousand visitors attend the gallery annually. Goody’s choice of artists for exhibition is an important element in the gallery’s continued success. Equally important is the attention he gives to the publication of exhibition catalogues. Not only are they permanent records of the art on exhibition, they connect the art to the artist by the rigor of analysis through contextual essays and insightful interviews. During his directorship of the Oakland University Art Gallery, Goody has curated 31 exhibitions, edited 25 catalogues, and written 40 essays for those catalogues. In addition, he has made sure that the gallery receives public recognition. During the past eight years, more than 120 critical reviews of gallery exhibitions have been published in such publications as The Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, and Metro Times. Goody has been instrumental in making the Oakland University Art Gallery one of the great treasures of the university and the community.
