Andrei Slavin

Professor of Physics
Area of Recognition: Research

As chair of the Department of Physics, Andrei Slavin promotes and facilitates high quality research. The department leads the university in external funding and its faculty has phenomenal publication rates. In recognition of this research productivity, the department received the Oakland University Outstanding Research Support Achievement Award in 2007. In his own research, Slavin developed the state-of-the-art theory of phase-locking of spin-torque oscillators which has many potential applications in the computer and communications industries. His current research support includes multiple grants from the Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation. This research involves international consortium collaborations with leading scientists in many countries, including Russia, Germany, Italy and the United States. During the past academic year, Slavin published 13 papers in high quality journals. His co-authored paper in Nature on the Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons at room temperature was recognized by the physicsweb.org as one of the 12 most important papers in physics in 2006. Slavin also is a frequently invited speaker at magnetism and multidisciplinary conferences around the world.
