Best known for her successful defense in a libel suit brought by Holocaust refuter David Irving and her subsequent book, “History on Trial,” scholar Deborah Lipstadt will present an Oakland University-sponsored talk at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit (JCC) in West Bloomfield on Monday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m.
Lipstadt will detail her five-year ordeal in defense of her statements that Irving was a falsifier of history and a right wing extremist, in addition to recent international events she says demonstrate a new form of anti-Semitism. Her appearance is co-sponsored by the JCC’s SAJE for All Seasons program and the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metro Detroit.
Lipstadt is director of the Institute for Jewish Studies and professor of modern Jewish and Holocaust studies at Emory University in Atlanta. She is the author of “Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory,” as well as “History on Trial,” which won the National Jewish Book Award. The Forward named her number two on its list of the “Forward Fifty,” the top Jewish newsmakers for the year 2000.
The event will take place in the Marion & David Handleman Hall & Auditorium, located in the D. Dan & Betty Kahn building on the Eugene & Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus, 6600 W. Maple Road in West Bloomfield. The event begins at 7 p.m. with a dessert reception; the lecture begins at 7:30 p.m.; and a book sale and signing will occur from 8:45 to 9:30 p.m.
