With Webmail Powered by Google, students retain their existing oakland.edu e-mail addresses. Faculty and staff, including those who also hold student status, will remain on the OU Webmail system but will notice a significant improvement in functionality.
“For the next few weeks, as students continue to access the OU network to import their mail and contacts into Webmail Powered by Google, faculty and staff may still notice some periods of slowness. However, when student e-mail data is deleted from the OU servers on May 1, any lingering issues with OU Webmail should be resolved,” said Chief Information Officer Terrie Rowe.
Students have the option of importing their old mail and contacts from the OU e-mail system to their new account in Webmail Powered by Google. Detailed instructions are provided on UTS’s Webmail Frequently Asked Questions page. On Thursday, May 1, student e-mails and contact lists residing on the OU e-mail server will be permanently deleted. Messages and contact lists that are not imported before May 1 will be irrecoverable.
Students will continue to log in to Webmail powered by Google from the existing Webmail page, which sports a new look to mark the transition. Faculty and staff will also log in to the existing e-mail system from that page.
“The redesigned Webmail log-in page directs each account holder to the correct system,” said Rowe. “The URL is http://webmail.oakland.edu. Please note that you will not be able to access the Webmail log-in page using the prefix https anymore.”
Students who have been using an e-mail client, such as Outlook, to manage their OU Webmail will have to adjust their settings now that the transition to Webmail Powered by Google is complete. Instructions appear on the Webmail Frequently Asked Questions page.
