Oakland University students elected Steve Clark and Daniel Evola as the OU Student Congress president and vice president for the 2008-09 academic year. The online elections were held March 24-26 culminating with the announcement on Friday, March 28. This year’s elections drew a record number of students to the polls.
“It is an honor to be able to represent the student body,” said outgoing OUSC President Rob Meyer. He encouraged the new president and vice president to work hand-in-hand with students, faculty, staff, administration and the surrounding community.
Clark, a senior, and his running mate Evola, a freshman, had a platform that included continuing funding free newspapers on campus, working closely with the Student Program Board to bring first-class events to OU, working with the administration on issues like tuition, parking and on campus housing, making OU athletic events more visible to students, continuing discussions for an OU football team, working with the student liaisons to the Board of Trustees to give students a voice in major university decisions and working to get students compensated by $4.8 million in deferred payment to the university from the state.
Both Clark and Evola have served in various roles on campus. Clark is team captain of the OU soccer team and volunteered for Campus Crusade for Christ, served as president of Young Life at OU and on the Student Athletic Advisory Council. Evola is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, a reporter at OUTV, a WXOU radio host and an honors college student.
“I have worn Oakland University across my chest in countless states competing and representing our school in soccer. In the last four years, I have come to take pride in Oakland,” wrote Clark in his platform statement.
In addition to the presidential elections, student voters also elected 10 legislators to seats on the OU Student Congress. The new legislators are Craig Brown, Kevin Costakes, Tom Cruz, Kristin Dayag, Jissa Johnson, Chelsea Ray, Amy Ring, Jarret Schlaff, Ben Spedoske and Matt Thomas. There are 13 remaining seats in the student congress and students are encouraged to visit the OUSC office to apply.
This election drew a record number of student voters. A total of 1,734 students, or 10.25 percent, of the registered student body voted. The election was close, with online 50 votes separating first and third place and seven separating first and second.
