OU sponsors ‘Living with Autism’ Workshop

Oakland University is co-sponsoring and participating in “Living with Autism,” a workshop for parents and professionals presented by Metro Parent magazine. The workshop will be held Wednesday, April 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Troy Hilton. The keynote speaker will be Jenny McCarthy, who will share her personal story.

Eight breakouts will be offered by autism experts from Oakland University’s Center for Autism Research Education and Support (OUCARES) along with Henry Ford Health System and the Kaufman Children’s Center. Breakout sessions include:

• “Diagnosing Autism: Developmental Screening and Early Diagnosis (repeats)”
• “All Grown Up with Autism: Adolescents and Adults with ASD”
• “The Genetic Connection: The Role of Genetics and Neurology in Autism and Autistic-like Behaviors”
• “Your Treatment Toolbox: Behavioral Intervention Options”
• “Sign and Say: Revolutionary Help for Non-Verbal Children with Autism”
• “Autism’s Alternative Options: Alternative Therapies for ASD”
• “Children with Autism…Families with Peace. Strategies for families to thrive”
• “One Size Does Not Fit All: Multiple Approaches to Educating Children with ASD”

McCarthy, television and film personality and best-selling author, will share her story of the struggles and triumphs of raising her son, Evan, who has autism.

Participants will also be able to make connections with others, visit vendor booths of local autism experts, talk to parents of autistic children and ask the experts questions, including a question and answer session with breakout session leaders and McCarthy.
