Latin American globalization topic of OU lecture

Werner Baer, the Lemann Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will deliver Oakland University’s 2008 Alice Connor Gorlin Memorial Lecture. The event will take place Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m. in 242 Elliot Hall.

As a prolific scholar and an expert on Latin American economies with special emphasis on Brazil, Baer will focus his lecture on the globalization on Latin America. The lecture will explore how and why most Latin American countries were forced to become globalized, what the benefits of globalization are to these countries and how this current status affects the United States.

Baer has authored or edited twelve books and has published more than 100 scholarly journal articles and book chapters. He holds honorary doctoral degrees from various universities in Brazil and Portugal, as well as The Order of the Southern Cross from the Brazilian government. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Cambridge University Press, World Development, and the Latin America Business Review.

The Gorlin Lecture was established in honor of former Professor of Economics Alice Conner Gorlin, who taught at OU from 1972 until her death in 1987. Gorlin’s dedication to the role of human beings as citizens of the world led her friends to sponsor this lecture series to promote understanding of international issues and events.
