Oakland University’s men’s club hockey team lost to Oklahoma 4-3 in the first round of the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s (ACHA) Division I National Tournament. The Grizzlies were looking to defend their national title.
OU senior Brent Cooper had one goal and two assists against Oklahoma. Kevin Kranker and Jarret Samp had OU’s other two goals. Oklahoma led 3-1 with 12 minutes remaining. Cooper score at nine minutes, cutting Oklahoma’s lead to one. The opponent scored again 53 second later to make the game 4-2. Samp scored with 2:21 remaining, but it was the last chance OU would bury the puck.
Oakland defeated Kent State in the consolation game, 9-5. OU seniors Steve Piccollo and Cooper led the team’s efforts to top Kent State. Cooper ended his OU career by scoring a hat trick and adding two assists. Piccollo had two goals and one assist. Cody Austin, Brett Haugh, Jesse Worrel and Scott Mcgillvray also tallied goals for OU. Andrew Hansen closed out his OU career with 43 saves against Kent State.
Cooper leaves OU as the school’s third all-time scorer. The win over Kent State also moved Head Coach Sean Hogan to first in all-time wins at OU with 75.
