Registration begins March 3 for Lowry Summer Camps. Geared for children 18 months to 6 years old, the camps kick off Monday, July 7 and wrap up Friday, Aug. 15. Children of Oakland University students, faculty and staff are given first priority for available spaces.
The themes of the 2008 camps include Art and Architecture, Magical Math and In Tune with Insects. Summer camp day runs 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Before and after care is available from 7:30 – 9 a.m., and 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., for an additional fee. Students can register for each of the two week sessions.
The summer camps are supervised by Lowry master’s level teachers, and taught by OU early childhood practicum students.
“Lowry is the model for early childhood education in Oakland County,” said Holly McFaul, program director, Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education. “Our teachers are teaching the children, as well as teaching future early childhood teachers.”
The summer program can accommodate up to 12 toddlers per session, with a one teacher to four children ratio, and up to 40 three- to six- year-olds with a one teacher to eight children ratio and no more than 20 children per classroom. Registration is ongoing until classes are filled. The two-week session for three to five year olds is $340. Pre-school children can enroll Tuesdays and Thursdays or Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, or Monday through Friday. Two days is $160, three days is $240, and five days is $390.
The Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education is part of the School of Education and Human Services. It is administered by the Department of Human Development and Child Studies and is licensed by the state of Michigan.
In addition to summer camps, a year-round educational program is offered for toddlers through pre-kindergarteners. Lowry is dedicated to fostering the cognitive, emotional, social and physical development of each child in a supportive and stimulating environment. Each classroom is equipped to meet the developmental needs of that particular age group.
