Athletics hosts theme nights for upcoming games

As the season winds down, the men’s and women’s basketball teams are hosting a number of theme nights. From appreciation events to fundraisers and throwback nights, Golden Grizzlies fans who come out to the games should check the schedules to participate in the special events.

On Saturday, Feb. 16, the OU basketball teams takes on Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne with the women’s game starting at 3:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game in the O’rena. The games’ themes will be Student Appreciation Night and St. Jude Hoops for Hope Night Fundraising Event.

During the women’s game, WDIV/Local 4 Meteorologist and OU alumna Kim Adams will serve as the honorary coach.

Oakland Athletics is recognizing all Oakland University students during the game. Students can join the Grizz Gang for free pizza and soft drinks during the doubleheader break. The pizza party will take place in the Aquatic Center seating section, located directly next to the O’rena. All student participants will receive prizes and giveaways.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be selling tickets for the men’s game as well as raffling off various items throughout the game. Oakland Basketball is proud to support St. Jude's and provide a venue as a means to continue to spread the word about the research hospital which treats children regardless of ability to pay. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.

Participants of a youth cheer clinic will perform during the halftime events at both games.

On Thursday, Feb. 21, the OU men’s team will take on Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis at 7:30 p.m. The game’s theme is Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night and Pioneer Throwback Night.

As a way to thank the OU faculty and staff, tickets to the game will be free of charge and the first 1,000 fans will receive free Pioneer Night posters that feature select past and present players. Golden Grizzlies fans are encouraged to wear Pioneer apparel.

Halftime entertainment will be performed by CT Soul Men, a Blues Brothers impersonation duo.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, both teams will be in action in the O’rena. The women take on IUPUI at 3:30 p.m. followed by the men playing Western Illinois University. This game is the men’s last home game of the season.

Oakland basketball donors and the Special Olympics will be in attendance and recognized during the game. Heart of Beck Jump Rope Group will present the halftime performance in support of the American Heart Association.
